Each year, as part of our mission to support and enrich the Gainesville art community, The Arts Council sponsors studio space for local emerging artists within our Arts Cottage which is home to Art Colony Georgia. With their studio space located inside a building that is already home to 25 experienced artists, these individuals gain access to a wide range of knowledge, skills, and practice to further their art careers.

At the end of their 12-month sponsorship, The Arts Council will host a month-long exhibit to showcase their art at the Smithgall Arts Center.

Additionally, as a part of this sponsorship these artists agree to plan and host, with support from TAC, three art-related events in underserved areas and markets within our community.

Our Sponsored Artists for the 2023/2024 year were Jorge Gurrola, Wendy Medrano, and Genesis Segovia. Each of these artists collaborated and planned the following 3 events within the Gainesville area.

Dia Radiante: August 17, 2024

We invite you to join our three sponsored artists for their last community outreach event.
This event will feature an artist market, a live drawing competition, and live drawing demonstrations from the Latine Artist Collective “Radiantes.”

  • Date: August 17, 2024
  • Time: 11AM to 4PM
  • Location: Guadalajara Market – 425 Atlanta Hwy, Gainesville, GA 30501

Soft Pastels Workshop at Academy of Innovation: March 26, 2024

The artists worked with the staff of local school, Academy of Innovation, to hold an art workshop for their students. With the workshop theme, Welcoming Spring, students were able to watch and learn how to use soft pastels and then put it into practice creating spring flower drawings with the help of the artists.

Holidays With our Neighbors: December 16, 2023

This was a Latine Holiday Art Market with the artists teaching local kids, and any adults in attendance, the art of sugar cookie decorating and helping to create holiday themed ornaments and decorations.

2023/2024 Sponsored Artists

Jorge Gurrola

“I am a painter and digital artist of Mexican heritage. I explore the canvas with vibrant colors and whimsical patterns. My artwork is influenced by my appreciation of nature, push for general wellness, and interest in reconstructing perspectives.”

Wendy Medrano

“I have enjoyed drawing and painting since I can remember. All of my art, in the most simple explanation, is a reflection of my current mental state with influence from my culture. There have been times in my life where I have taken art so seriously that it was hard to find joy in it, but my current ‘belief’ is that I am just making art that makes me happy and hopefully makes other people feel happier. The majority of my art is to admire the simple things in life.”

Genesis Segovia

A Latina artist from Gainesville, Georgia, Genesis Segovia has been expanding her art into pastries and desserts. She painted years ago and is just now picking up a paintbrush again. With her passion for incorporating beautiful Latin-American based themes in her artwork, Genesis creates unique works that feel welcoming and nostalgic.

Additional Artist – Included in Exhibit

Ana Gongora

I’m an acrylic and oil painter that is from Durango, Mexico. I’m a wife and mother of two that has worked hard all of my life. I’ve always put these things ahead of my personal interests. After some health struggles I learned that I should invest more time in doing what I enjoy because life is too short. A piece of me goes into every painting I create, and I find it rewarding when my artwork evokes different emotions from people. I feel proud to call myself an artist.
